Elkhart is a city located in Elkhart County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 51,874.
Elkhart was long the headquarters of one of the United States leading manufacturers of brass band musical instruments, C.G. Conn. The city's status as a chief producer of band instruments began in 1875. Other major products include pharmaceuticals (the industry dates from 1884), machinery, electrical equipment, motor homes, and trailers. Agriculture and livestock are also prevalent.

Story was first posted at 10:54 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010. ELKHART - Donald Scott Thompson, 48, of Mishawaka, was flying what FAA investigators called a "homemade plane" when it crashed just before 8 p.m. Wednesday night at Elkhart Municipal Airport.
