Elkhart is a city located in Elkhart County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 51,874.
Elkhart was long the headquarters of one of the United States leading manufacturers of brass band musical instruments, C.G. Conn. The city's status as a chief producer of band instruments began in 1875. Other major products include pharmaceuticals (the industry dates from 1884), machinery, electrical equipment, motor homes, and trailers. Agriculture and livestock are also prevalent.

A 14-year-old Elkhart Central High school student was Tasered while police were trying to break up a fight at the school, police say.
Overturned semi stalls traffic at Elkhart intersection
An overturned semi stalled traffic and drew a crowd Monday night in Elkhart. The accident happened around 7:00 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 6 and Cassopolis Street.
